See linked document for full description of this hike. The trail begins to the east from the parking area on the rough County Road #1178 through dense subalpine forest with views north to east through the trees across a meadow that the road follows, allowing dramatic views of the rigged northern 10 Mile Range and (primarily) Pacific, Atlantic, and Fletcher peaks (high 13ers). The slopes on this segment of the trail are nearly flat to some moderate climbs. There is one partially standing cabin and other interesting mine ruins about halfway up this segment of the trail to the main mine village, where three buildings are partially to mostly still standing. At 1.9 miles nearly to the mine village, the trail continues south up the north face of the ridge to the top of Gold Hill on steeper slopes and rapidly onto the tundra where there are sweeping views across the glacial basin in which the mine sits and Fletcher rises to nearly 14K feet to the east. From Gold Hill, there are sweeping views around us of the Mosquito and Sawatch ranges and interesting perspectives on the faulting of the east and west horsts of the Rio Grande Rift. Once topping the ridge, we hike a short distance east to a high point where we will have lunch. We return via the same route and will take time to hike over to the main village of the mine to observe the remaining structures.
