Autumn Hike: Cougars Shadow & Blackmer

 10/18/2025  |  10:00 AM - 01:30 PM
  Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Summer is over and cooler days are here. The weather is never better for a day hike. Have you ever been out hiking and had questions about the plants and creatures you came across? Have you wanted to do nature journaling but didn’t want to carry notebooks and writing or drawing instruments? Do you want to help scientists globally to better understand biodiversity, distribution, and rarity of species? Join volunteer naturalist Ranger Rick for a 4.0 mile hike to learn how to use phone apps to do all those things! You’ll learn how to use two apps: the Seek app by iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID (available for iPhone and Android) to identify and catalog Autumn flora and fauna at the park.. To assure a prompt start, please download both apps to your phone and set up your profiles prior to arriving at the trailhead. Bring plenty of water, snacks, good hiking shoes/boots. If you wish to bring binoculars, that’s fine as well. The hike is limited to 15 participants and are recommended for ages 7 and up; children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are NOT permitted. Register on CPW Connect. The hike is weather permitting and may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather or muddy trails. You will be notified in the case of any changes or cancellations. Free event, park pass required. Location: Prairie Falcon Amphitheatre Start Time: 10:00 AM Time Duration: 3 Hours Questions? Rick P - ALL Cheyenne Mountain State Park Volunteers

I am a USAF retiree, but still working full-time. At the park, I’m a volunteer Interpretive Ranger (Naturalist), Trail Ambassador, and Lead Mountain Bike Instructor at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. Leading hikes in my favorite volunteer activity. Because I still have a regular job, I don’t get to work at the park as much as I’d like to. My regular job pays the bills, but working at the park brings me peace. I love it.
