See linked document for full description of this hike. The hike follows a glacial-cut basin all the way to the lakes and pass. Views are spectacular all the way and we will stop to enjoy them often (as well as enjoying the varied rocks). The trail starts steeply up onto the tundra and climbs into a hanging valley, all beside a cascading creek. The trail, then, climbs less steeply to a second bench and around an upper valley as it contours to Independence Lakes. At the lakes, there are actually two separate bodies of water in the glacial cirque. The trail continues north from the lakes up to Lost Man Pass where there are commanding view north and south over rugged glacial-cut country and another glacial lake. If time, tired muscles, and weather allow, there is a very interesting side trip up the tundra to a high point on the ridge east of the pass (an extra 500-foot climb to view the headwaters of Lake Creek and the back side of Mt. Massive). For those not interested, it is very enjoyable to hike no farther than the Independence Lakes. After visiting the lakes and pass, we will return to the cars via the same trail and enjoy the outstanding views in the opposite direction.
