See linked document for full description of this hike. The hike begins at the Hecla picnic area just to the south of the beach along the River at the entrance to the Hecla River Trail. We begin with an examination and discussion of some of the beautiful metamorphic rocks around the picnic area and along the beginning of the trail where we gently drop along the Arkansas River. We encounter a metamorphosed diorite cliff and climb up onto the first set of sand dunes where we get good views of lower Brown’s Canyon. We drop down near the Arkansas River again and, then, up onto another bench where we begin to view Railroad Gulch across the River. We cross a gully and intermittent stream and up onto a final bench where we walk into a steep-walled portion of lower Brown’s Canyon and walk high above the quiet flowing River. We hike on to the end of the trail and overlook of the Sidel Suckhole Rapids, an impressive set of rapids. We will turn around here within view of the southern end of the Monument for the return hike.
