The Colorado Trail to the south starts at the very south central edge of the campground and heads south a short distance to a great bridge over Clear Creek and southeast a short distance to a series of easy switchbacks through open forest with aspens for about a quarter mile. Then, the trail turns southwest and climbs the moraine for about a half mile in open forest with aspen groves at a modest grade with some steeper short grades and a little switchbacking. At about 0.8 mile we enter denser lodgepole pine forest and the grade picks up with some switchbacking and some steeper sections for about 0.2 mile. The trail straightens toward the southwest again in the forest and passes under a power line. Soon, closer to the top of the moraine ridge we enter a last section of switchbacks and steeper slopes for the last 0.4 mile to the top of the moraine. At the top, we have great views to the north, east, and west as we look down on Clear Creek Reservoir valley, and we continue a short distance south on the CT to a beautiful meadow, lunch spot, and turn-around point for the hike. We return via the same trail through very pleasant forest down to the vehicles.
