Minimum Age Required
Join us for our 3 mile or 1 mile Night Hikes where we will navigate Cheyenne Mountain State Park trails by the light of the moon. During the hike, our volunteer naturalist, Ranger Rick, will make stops during the hike to discuss our park's history, share facts and tell stories about the moon and stars, and learn how to identify stars with our eyes and apps. There are several free star map apps available for iPhone and Android such as Night Sky, Star Chart, and SkyView Lite. Choose your favorite! On the 1 mile hike, NASA Solar System Ambassador, Dave Warner, will point out astronomical features visible to the naked eye and tell star stories. The hikes are limited to 20 participants and are recommended for ages 7 and up; children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. NOTE: the 3 mile hike can be strenuous in certain parts and will also have areas where roots and rocks are present. Consider the 1 mile hike if you are unsure of your fitness level or may not be used to the Colorado Springs altitude. Dogs are NOT permitted. In addition to the hikes, members of the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society will be here with their telescopes to share the wonders of the universe. Summer presents its own unique sky for the viewing and discussion of solar system and deep space objects, so come on out! The astronomy program is recommended for all ages; children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Come for the hike, astronomy, or both! Register on CPW Connect. The hike and astronomy program are weather permitting and may be cancelled in the event of cloudy skies, inclement weather or muddy trails. You will be notified in the case of any changes or cancellations. Free event, park pass required.
