See linked document for full description of this hike. Hike Overview: We hike from Boreas Pass, where we park, and can first explore the remaining old RR camp buildings and ruins. We begin the hike from the pass north and east along an old water supply ditch and climb through the upper subalpine forest and krummholz to treeline in 0.8 mile and 150 feet of elevation gain. Coming out of the forest, we cross a newly constructed bridge and enter the tundra and the steeper part of the climb. We climb east about 500 feet in three-quarters of a mile to Black Powder Pass with views of Bald Mt. and Boreas Peak around us as well as views off toward the Ten Mile/Gore Ranges, the Hoosier Ridge, and Mt. Silverheels. The initial rugged views arriving at the pass almost take your breath away. Once we take in the views of the French Pass basin, we will continue north up the end of the Bald Mt. SE ridge for a quarter-mile and a 150-foot elevation gain to spectacular open views of the surrounding area. As time and weather permit, we can easily walk a little farther up the ridge on grassy tundra slopes and trail. We return via the same route after lunch on the tundra ridge (if weather permits) or at Black Powder Pass (where there is good protection).
