Volunteer naturalist, Ranger Rick, leads this 17 mile out-and-back hike that will take you through three different ecozones to an elevation of 9,300 feet, logging about 3,500 feet of elevation to get there. This hike is weather and trail conditions permitting and limited to 20 participants. Recommended for ages 14 and up; children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Note: The Dixon Trail is rated as a Double Black Diamond hiking trail with a climb rating of Advanced to Extreme due to switch backing and steep climbs among large rock outcroppings, particularly toward the top. Average grade is 11% with a max grade of 41%. A good awareness of your physical fitness level, joint health and acclimation to high altitude is very important to successfully complete this hike. This is a ROUND TRIP hike with no available pickup locations. Camping is NOT permitted. Additionally, dogs are NOT allowed on the hike. Proper hiking footwear, layering and hiking poles are highly recommended. Bring plenty of water and food. This hike will commence at 6:30 AM sharp. Becky W - ALL Cheyenne Mountain State Park Volunteers
I have lived in Colorado my entire life. My career was as an urban forester for the City of Colorado Springs followed by a 2nd career as an arborist in the private tree care industry. I enjoy hiking and running with my dogs and family. I also enjoy the history of our natural areas.

Rick P - ALL Cheyenne Mountain State Park Volunteers
I am a USAF retiree, but still working full-time. At the park, I’m a volunteer Interpretive Ranger (Naturalist), Trail Ambassador, and Lead Mountain Bike Instructor at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. Leading hikes in my favorite volunteer activity. Because I still have a regular job, I don’t get to work at the park as much as I’d like to. My regular job pays the bills, but working at the park brings me peace. I love it.
