Mt. Shavano Hatchery Assistance


Description:

This volunteer position will assist with many aspects of fish culture and grounds upkeep at the Mt. Shavano Hatchery.

Duties may include:

  • Feeding fish Cleaning raceway screens
  • Cleaning fish waste from tanks, nurseponds and raceways using brooms and gas-powered trash pumps
  • Removing dead fish and eggs from tanks
  • Set up / take down raceway dam boards and screens
  • Crowding and netting fish
  • Cleaning fish eggs
  • Assisting with fish health assessments Mowing and trimming grass
  • Cutting woody vegetation
  • Sweeping, mopping and other general cleaning duties
  • Painting exterior of buildings using brushes, rollers and sprayers
  • Light carpentry and plumbing
  • Volunteer must be able to lift 75 lbs.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work in inclement weather.
  • Must be willing to wade in water during all inclement weather.
  • Must exhibit safe practices and follow all safety Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (provided).
  • Volunteer will need to pass a background check including a driving record check in order to operate state vehicles.

Waders and gloves will be provided.

Time Commitment:

Most projects require a minimum time commitment of 2 hours.
