Get Involved: Mueller State Park - Seasonal Campground Host

A group of campers sit around a picnic table and in lawn chairs with their RV parked behind them.

Seasonal Campground Host

Description:

Located in the mountain community of Divide, Colorado. This park boasts beautiful mountain views. Mueller is currently seeking a volunteer host for the 2027 season from May-mid October.

For the summer season we give priority to those who can stay the entire season.

Amenities:

An RV site will be available with water and propane hookups along with a 20, 30 or 50 amp electrical hookup. Sewer hookups are available at RV sites and there is a dump station in the park that is open during the summer.

Sites are in exchange for working 20 hours per individual each week (4 hour shifts, 5 days a week). Days off vary.

Dogs are allowed in the campground, but not on the trails.

Laundry and internet are available at the maintenance shop for hosts to use as needed.

Cell reception and internet is very limited at some of the host sites. Some hosts purchase and use Starlink while they're here for internet and calls.

People are welcome to apply to volunteer as an individual or as a pair. Previous experience hosting is nice, but not required.

Responsibilities:

Some responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • cleaning of a flush toilet facility
  • cleaning campfire pits
  • trash collection
  • rental cabin housekeeping including laundry
  • other projects to fulfill the 20-hour per week agreement.

Good to Know:

The park is at 9,800 ft elevation. If you're coming from lower elevations plan to arrive a few days before your first shift so you have time to acclimate.

It can still be cool and snowy in May and October. June-August temps tend to be in the 70s-80s for highs with lows in the 40s & 50s.

Couples and pairs welcome to apply. (Fill out separate applications, please!)

Dogs are allowed in developed areas of the park, not on trails or in the backcountry.

There will be snow here in the winter. At times, the park will get multiple feet of snow at once. The maintenance team is very good at keeping roads within the park plowed. Highway 67, the road outside the park, can be snow covered and icy at times. Heavy snow is usually expected February-April.

Time Commitment:

20 hours per person per week.

Volunteer Benefits:

Enjoy working with a light hearted team to keep the park beautiful all year round. If you volunteer for 48 hours or more, you will earn a free volunteer park pass to all Colorado State Parks. There is also a catered volunteer appreciation lunch in January.

You can also pat yourself on the back knowing that you are an important team member who plays a role in improving the visitors' experience. We commonly receive comments on how clean the park and campsites are which is thanks to our volunteer hosts and maintenance staff.

Accessibility:

This role does require being able to be on your feet for hours at a time, squatting, bending, and lifting.

If you have any questions about the physicality involved or how we may be able to adapt the role for varying abilities, please contact volunteer coordinator, Anna Urban at [email protected].
