Stone Wall Sundays

Sundays 11/24 - 12/29 @ 09:30 AM to 02:30 PM

Trail Work  -  All Ages

Hello, future rock-knockers! On Sundays through the winter and spring (weather permitting), we'll learn how to build stone walls. We'll work mostly at the Rincon climbing area - it gets great sun and needs extensive wall building. We'll meet at the Visitor Center at 9:30 and return to same by 2:30. The objective of these sessions is to train a volunteer corps of excellent Eldo stone wall builders. We'll cover the basics of stone selection and transport, foundations, coursed walls, rubble walls, mono walls and stone fences, copes, tool selection and use, and site safety. The most important things to bring are a decent base level of aerobic fitness and a beginner's mind. Every day in Eldo is leg day, and the hike to the Rincon area is particularly steep. Learning to build durable, sharp-looking stone walls is a lifetime endeavor. The terrain can be extremely challenging - this is not a good fit for people with stability challenges. Anyone who attends three sessions and then passes an assessment will be awarded the coveted "Eldorado Rock-Knocker" sweatshirt, and will be able to work with minimal supervision on stone wall projects around the park. This is a great fit if you're looking for a chance to take care of Eldorado, do work that will last, and enjoy some quality time trailside. Building good stone walls is also a great way to start learning how to build bigger structures like stone stairways. All are welcome. You may get a workout and possibly some scrapes and bruises. There is a non-zero chance that fun will be had. When there are weather issues, I'll cancel at least 24 hours before. Hope you can join in.
