Annual Christmas Tree Cut - Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Take part in our Annual Christmas Tree Cut held the first Saturday of December. It's the luck of the draw and for those families who receive a permit they get to cut their own Christmas Tree. This annual cut helps the state park manage the forest by removing smaller trees that may otherwise intensify wildfires and thinning out trees allows the remaining ones to grow big, strong and healthy. This in turn will strengthen the forest ecosystem and provide a home to more species of wildlife and a greater diversity of plants. Santa, activities, snacks and drink are at the Visitor Center to compliment this family experience. Volunteers will be split into two shifts; 800AM-12PM and 12PM-400PM. One Christmas Tree Permit free of charge per household will be given to volunteers. Duties will include: Check for parks pass & tree permit Advise of best access area based on vehicle type Monitor parking Check/validate permit as vehicles leave Utilize radios for communication among different stations Helping Staff at the Visitor Center Attend brief training and orientation prior to your shift

Volunteer Notes
As a volunteer you will have responsibilities during your shift. There will be a lot of traffic and for that reason there will be no volunteers under the age of 18. Your family is welcome to meet you before or after your shift time to harvest your tree. This is non-negotiable for liability reasons. Your "permit" will be on the list at the Check In/Out Stations - no need to stop into the Visitor Center beforehand if you're cutting before 2nd shift. PLEASE be mindful how long this may actually take you in order to be at your station on time. Be Prepared: Bring proper clothing and footwear for the weather. Bring a water bottle and reusable coffee mug - we will provide water throughout the stations and coffee will be available in the Visitor Center. Bring supplies for cutting your own tree: hand saw, twine, tarp, pocket knife, etc. You will not have phone service in the park, so have detailed plans with friends and family.
