It's time for Golden Gate Canyon State Park's Backcountry Campsites to receive some major updates. Join us on a two day (backcountry camping optional) volunteer project where we will be rebuilding campsites U-X in Deer Creek. By the end of this project, the campsites will be more sustainable, eliminate future erosion issues, and allow bigger tents on the pad. Existing landscape timbers designating tent pad locations will be removed. Surrounding area will be cleaned up (vegetation removal, leveling ground). New 12foot 4x4inch timbers will be laid out in a 12x12ft square, then staked into the ground using ½ inch rebar. Crusher fines (fine gravel mix) will be used to backfill the pad creating a level surface. This project will take place on August 23rd and 24th. Volunteers are given the option to camp for free in the sites they will be working on Friday night, August 22nd through Saturday night, August 23rd. The sites are Creek Side along the Mountain Lion Trail. The hike in is roughly 1-1.5miles. Fires are not allowed in the backcountry. Bring your own food and water. Cooking on camp stoves is permitted. Volunteers who plan to camp overnight will need to bring their own backpacking gear and pack it to the site. This project will be accomplished using hand tools provided by the park, basic knowledge is appreciated, but not required. Tools and materials will be transported to the sites prior to the volunteer project. Volunteers will receive a brief training on tools and safety at the start of the project. Project Hours will be from 9:00AM - 3:30PM
